ACL injury and prehabilitation
Paul Bellamy is Principal Physiotherapist from Formation Physio in South Hurstville. Today he talks to us about ACL knee injury and prehabilitation.
So you’re booked in for ACL reconstruction surgery. What does the research say about prehabilitation?
Research suggests that a period of prehabilitation is beneficial for patients with anterior cruciate ligament injury who are considering surgery.
How does prehab help?
Pre-operative physio rehabilitation is effective for improving outcomes following ACL injury, including:
✅Improved function
Pre-operative physiotherapy has been shown to improve knee-related function on testing at 6 and 12 months post surgery
✅Improved strength
Pre-surgery physio for ACL reconstruction patients for 3-14 weeks is superior to no physio at improving strength for patients post-surgery
✅Improved quality of life
Better pre-operative knee function and outcomes resulted in better post-op outcomes 3-6 years after surgery
If you are considering or booked in for ACL surgery, a period of prehab has been shown to be effective for improving your outcomes following ACL injury, including increasing knee-related function, improving muscle strength and quality of life.
